The product is an immunological test for the qualitative detection of D-dimer in human citrated blood, citrated plasma and capillary blood from the fingertip. The test is an aid for the exclusion of disseminated intravascular coagulation disorders (DIC), deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism.
D-dimers are cleavage products of the fibre protein fibrin from blood clotting. During wound healing, fibrin and blood platelets (thrombocytes) coagulate to form blood clots. In the case of abnormal blood clotting, blood clots form within intact blood vessels (thrombus). Thrombi can block the vessel where they form (thrombosis) or be carried away by the blood flow and cause a vascular occlusion (embolism) elsewhere. During the dissolution of the blood clot (fibrinolysis), cross-linked strands in the fibrin are split. The splitting of fibrin leads, among other things, to the so-called D-dimers. Elevated D-dimer values indicate increased coagulation and fibrinolysis activity. In medicine, D-dimer is determined from a blood sample if there is a suspicion of thromboembolism (leg vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) or excessive blood clotting (disseminated intravascular coagulation). D-dimer as a biomarker has a high sensitivity but a low specificity. A positive test result can indicate thrombosis, but does not rule out other possible causes, some of which should also be considered an emergency. If the result is negative, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism are very unlikely.

The test cannot be used for diagnosis alone and should be evaluated in the context of the patient's medical history and a confirmatory laboratory test.
