The product is an immunological test for the qualitative detection of influenza A and B viruses in human nasal swab samples. The test is intended as an aid in the diagnosis of influenza infection.
Influenza virus infection is a common respiratory disease worldwide. The following four influenza subtypes or lineages currently cause most cases of seasonal influenza in humans: the two subtypes H1N1 and H3N2 of influenza type A and the two influenza B lineages B-Victoria and B-Yamagata.
The typical symptoms of influenza are characterised by a sudden onset of illness, fever, cough or sore throat and muscle and/or headache. Other symptoms may include general weakness, sweating, rhinorrhoea and, rarely, nausea/vomiting and diarrhoea. However, many other, mostly viral, respiratory pathogens can also cause such symptoms.
Transmission is mainly by droplet infection, which occurs in particular when coughing and sneezing. The incubation period is short and lasts 1-2 days.
The test is intended exclusively for use by medically trained personnel.
The test cannot be used for diagnosis alone and should be evaluated in the context of the medical history and a confirmatory test performed in a diagnostic laboratory.
