Troponin I (myocardial infarction)

Cardiac troponin is released into the bloodstream when there is cell damage to the heart muscle (necrosis of the myocardium). The troponin of the skeletal muscle differs from that of the heart muscle, so that cardiac troponin I can be used as a highly sensitive heart-specific marker for myocardial damage due to its high specificity. In healthy people, (cardiac) troponin is generally not detectable. The troponin rapid test is used for the early detection of myocardial damage. The symptoms of a heart attack are variable and also differ between men and women, so that a quickly detectable parameter can be helpful for diagnosis.

The test is intended for use by medically trained personnel only. The test cannot be used for diagnosis alone and should be evaluated in the context of the patient's medical history and a confirmatory laboratory test.
